When we begin to consider connection as a universal mandate, we can think of networks less in terms of “providers” and “pipes” and more in terms of “mesh.” We’ve seen practical applications for peer-to-peer mesh networks, as in the umbrella revolution in Hong Kong. Developing sophisticated mesh networks — especially in developing countries — holds great promise, especially in combination with satellite and other experimental aerial backhaul solutions. If we reframe the problem in this way, we should be able to connect everyone.
