Those who use our digital tools to uncover corruption and expose power, to open knowledge and promote a critical society should be encouraged and supported rather than repressed. The avant-garde activism we see emerging should be embraced rather than criminalised, supported rather than marginalised and no double standards should apply for dissidents of the North and of the South. The last five years both liberal states and those countries where liberties are constrained have witnessed a shift in power and have reacted to it moving towards a more closed society. We need courageous philanthropy to support a change of direction. We need a safe net to guarantee that the future thinkers and revolutionaries of our times do not end up silenced, in jail or exile.
