The potential of universal access to information as a democratizing force has never been more promising. However this potential is seen by incumbent institutions of government and commerce as a major threat that needs to controlled if not entirely blocked. Making sure every citizen has equal access to affordable and secure information resources is the prerequisite cornerstone for a fair and equitable society. The cable and telecom industries in consort with paid their political allies have monopolized the landscape to the point of severely discouraging new private investment or public incentives to address the growing disparity for those not equally connected. The world needs a new visionary philanthropic commitment to invest in a new generation of projects, organizations, institutions, and activists who will create new wired and wireless networks that will challenge the status quo, and by their very existence support the creation of entirely new civic fabric of public trust and hope.
