People need control of their data, without being excluded from the powerful technologies it enables. Technology providers are currently able to set undemocratic, take-it-or-leave-it conditions for access to users' data. Envision and implement equitable systems for negotiating data access. How can users specify fine-grained control over their data? Is it possible to provide data-based services without direct access to data? And how can providers be persuaded to relinquish their control?
