Working Together for a Stronger Digital Society

Netgain Challenge

From Steven Clift
One of the most democratizing aspects of the networked digital age is the ability of people to easily organize and communicate in groups online. The freedom of expression becomes powerful if we can easily connect in groups be it on popular but commercially controlled social media platforms because we use the same hashtag to online groups where we trade the ease of recruiting new members on a name brand platform in exchange for accepting the loss of an "export members" option. Whether it is protection from government censors or legal limits on our assembly online or group assembly that is threatened by commercial prerogatives or threats from extremist groups using intimidation, a fundamental challenge is ensuring that those seeking to assemble online can do so without fear of retribution and viably attract members independently beyond being practically forced to use name-brand online tools in order to be visible and accessible online.
