Netgain Challenge

Most significant new areas of human endeavour eventually develop major institutions that serve to protect and promote the public interest. From NPR in the media sector to public universities in the education sector, it seems that any significant new sector eventually develop large and enduring institutions that that compensate for market failures, and which symbolise our shared hopes for a better world. The internet today lacks any such public interest institutions, except for those that represent policing and anti-terrorism concerns (and these are, of course, highly controversial). My grand challenge is to design blueprints for major new institutions that will serve the public interest in areas that exist solely because of the power and scale of the internet.
