Can we preserve civil liberties privacy while also responsibly ensuring security and taking advantage of the convenience of Netflix recommendations? Can we improve access to critical digital information infrastructure without handing over the public culture to private corporations? Can we democratize the governing of the Internet without ceding it to forces of repression? Too often these questions are left beneath the surface or, worse still, perceived as null. But neither willful blindness nor fatalism will allow us to choose a positive future, where technology accelerates equity, participation and human thriving. We must work from a vision of equity, with the digital age fostering equity rather than destroying it further.
